Celebrate…at Fort George – A Great Day Out

Recently dearest son and I went to something called the Celebration of the Centuries which was held at Fort George just down the road from us. If you’ve never heard of it, Fort George is an 18th-century fortress near Ardersier, to the north-east of Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland. It was built to control the Scottish Highlands in the aftermath of the Jacobite rising of 1745.

It is an active base and currently the home of the Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (3 SCOTS).

This event took place over a weekend and we decided to go on the Sunday after checking the weather forecast!

It was a fantastic day out – we saw Picts, Vikings, Romans, Jacobites, Edwardian ladies (or were they Tudor?!), WWI soldiers and folks from WW2. They each had a camp you go to and see how they lived, after watching their re-enactment of course! We saw a swing band from WW2, weapons, horses, the land girls, Roman catapults, Viking crafts – the lot. If they were in Britain as some point in the past, there was a group there to represent them.

There is also a brilliant museum to visit!

I can’t show you how loud the cannons were but I can share with you some of the pictures I took on the day:

If you ever manage to get to this part of the world, I can’t recommend this event enough!
