Seed Saving Experiment

I usually try to save some of my own seeds from plants I’ve grown in the year. This year I’ve managed to get:

Tomato

Nasturtium

Peas

Coriander

Poppy

Fennel (or dill, not sure!)

Broad beans

Calendula

Cosmos

I left a couple of onion plants on the plot which had grown seed heads. I haven’t tried this before so I don’t know if I’ve done it right or not but I brought the seed heads indoors a couple of days ago and hung them up to dry. They don’t look like much but I’ve pulled one of the bits open and there were little black onion seeds in it so I’m hopeful!

I’ve also noticed a chard plant with seeds so I might be able to get some of them too.

Bearing in mind I haven’t started saving seed from the pumpkins, courgettes (last couple I have) or the other squash. I thought I might try the same with a couple of the potatoes – haven’t decided yet. I do wonder why I buy ‘seed potatoes’ every year (which is becoming increasingly expensive), when I have some of my own – can I just store them till I’m ready to chit them? I don’t know, but I am leaning towards trying it with at least a few of them. Same with the garlic. My garlic has never grown very big which is why I’ve always bought some for growing but I think its been my technique not the cloves I was planting.

I feel another experiment coming on – I will let you know how I get on!
