Multi-sowing seeds – make more out of your space for less

As the seed sowing frenzy continues with many of us, I wanted to show you a method which helps you to make more out of whatever space you have and saves you time and money: multi-sowing.

This is a technique I have picked up from Charles Dowding who has a great Youtube channel and website if you are interested. What he has discovered is that some seeds are perfectly happy being sown together with their little seed friends and do not need to be sown one seed per cell. As a result of this, you get more plants in the same space and don’t need to use as much compost.

Traditionally we got our cell tray, filled it with compost and put one seed in each cell, but in this picture you will see I have put quite a few spring onion seeds in the cell:

You can pop in any amount of seeds from around 4 to 8 or even 10 depending on the size of your cell. Then, once they have grown enough to be handled, plant them out together as a bundle. As they grow, they will separate away from each other and as you pick the odd one or two from each bundle, you leave more room for the others to develop.

Some of the best seeds suitable for this method are:

Spring onions (scallions)

Onions (globe)

Beetroot

Leeks

I would encourage you to try these and see just how much your yield increases!

Happy gardening my green fingered friends!
