Finally transplanting tomatoes and cucumbers into polytunnel

Thanks to the great Scottish weather we’ve had for the last few weeks, my plants are really suffering but I’ve finally managed to get some tomatoes and a few ill-looking cucumbers transplanted into the polytunnel on the plot.

I’ve used the string method, where you tie the string to a bar at the top of the polytunnel and let it hang down (not too tight), into the potting hole for your plant. Then put your plant on top of it so it can grow up and you gently wrap it around the string for support. No more bamboo canes in the eye for me thank you very much.

Selection of tomatoes and cucumbers
Putting string into planting hole first and tomato on top
Gently wrapping tomato plant around the string for support
Plastic bottles buried beside the plants to fill with water so the plants get plenty to drink
Same process done with the cucumbers (hopefully they will grow bigger)

I gave the cucumbers a bit of extra protection with parts of bottles around them or whatever else I could find. The attack of the snails continues throughout the land and I’m determined to get some cucumbers this year.

Sinking a bottle or pot beside your plants is a great way to make sure they don’t dry out, especially if you can’t tend to them every day. Fingers crossed we get a good crop this year! I’m trying Red Brandy wine tomatoes for the first time so I’m really interested to see how they turn out. They are a beefsteak variety I believe, which I’m looking forward to already.

    1. Thank you. The cucumbers didn’t look great but it looks like it is to get warmer next week so I’m hopeful I’ll get something.
