I haven’t been up to the allotment much this week as the weather has been so bad and we seem to have allocated Sunday as a day to go up regardless of the weather. I told Hubby it’s my ‘outdoor church’.
When we arrived, Dearest Son stayed in the car and I went to check on Lazarus (cucumber plant with his own story), as the rain was pretty heavy and I thought a job under cover would be best.

Look at the size of him! He even has a couple of baby cucumbers growing – I’m very proud of him.
The other plants, however got a bit of a telling off. Too many leaves, not enough tomatoes (there are 3 in total, whoopee) and not a sign of any aubergines (eggplants). I did cut back the tomato plants a bit to give them the hint and did a bit of weeding as they were growing quicker than anything else.

Elsewhere on the plot there were good and bad points.

So the peas and beans have had a great year. The broad beans are going for a second harvest and seem to be growing again from the bottom!
The potatoes got blight so I’ve had to cut them down and will harvest in a couple of weeks. The fruit has been good but the bay is covered with weeds, in fact a few areas are pretty weedy which is disheartening considering how much time I’ve spent weeding this year.
The onions are small but still coming in and very edible. The brassicas are a mixed bag – the cauliflowers are obviously a no but we’ve had broccoli, kale and now kohl rabi. The celeriac is growing but I don’t know if they will reach a decent size and I’ve got a few cabbages looking very promising too.
So lots of weeds but also lots of produce and I can’t complain about that considering the weather we’ve had this season. I don’t think the photos show it well but by the time we left it was pouring so heavily it wasn’t funny. That’s after light rain, drizzle, wind, sunshine, drizzle, dry – all in today’s trip to the plot! Welcome to gardening in Scotland.
