Big Fail

There are some things I just can’t do.

After reading about Laura’s post being stolen I think a lot of us have become more aware of the need to put some sort of official copyright on our posts – something I’d never done previously.

So, on Friday morning, I set out to do just that.

Wait…..”What’s a block again?”

“What’s a pattern?”

“Does it go on single or where?”

“Do I need a template – what are they again?”

You can see how well it went. For some reason, I just can’t get my head around these terms and how to use them. The only reason I’ve ever sorted anything on my blog is because the very patient people at WordPress support are able to explain it to me at a level I can understand! (I’ve even had videos sent to me to SHOW me what to do, which was extremely helpful).

My brain just doesn’t work this way. I’m not technically minded because I’m not technically interested!

I’ve had times when I wanted to add something to my pages but it involved adding a line of code or something so it never happened – I did try but all you could see was the line of code, not the image you were meant to see.

So, back to Friday morning. There I was, trying to sort something out which I was happy with and when I finally thought I’d cracked it, I opened a new tab to check my site – it was gone. Completely gone. Couldn’t see a thing.

Back to support.

I explained what I’d done and what I was now seeing. I was on hold while they went to check and came back with the news:

“You’ve deleted your home page, would it help if I reset it back to the original so you can put your stuff back on?”

What? Deleted? Reset? Do it AGAIN??!!

No, that wouldn’t help because I have no idea how I did it in the first place.

So after practically crying along the interwebzones and explaining my uselessness at all this (which took some time you understand), I got this message:

“Check it now”

I did – it was back to normal. Just like that.

I asked the wizard what he did (didn’t ask why he didn’t do that in the first place though) and he sent me links to pages which explain it. When I say explain it, you’ll understand, they explain it if you know what the hell they’re talking about – which I don’t.

Anyway, I’m not messing with anything anymore. I type, I add the odd picture and I’ve got the copyright message on. Just leave it, walk away and no more deleting….my nerves couldn’t take it again.

  1. Ohhh no I’m so sorry my post sparked some craziness for you 😬 glad you got it all fixed though! 🙏 it can be a nightmare. I tried to change my template one time and it went all nutso and you couldn’t see anything on my site. Luckily I changed it back pretty swiftly. Phew 😅 you’d think it’d be just a tad easier. Maybe you could make a separate page for that? It can be a pain, but if it’s something I truly don’t want taken (which is all of it, and should go without saying, really!) I think I’m just going to start writing a one-liner at the end of posts. I hate tagging things constantly, but it seems like there might be no other option 🤷‍♀️

    1. ha ha yes it’s all your fault! No it was ok, taught me a lesson (again). In the end I did it on the single template which means a copyright line goes at the bottom of every post now.

  2. You got help from WP? This might be a historical first 😄
Yes, the scumbag really ruined posting for a lot of us no doubt.
Some days it’s think it’s better to just write in a notebook and keep my thoughts to myself.

    1. I get that sentiment but it’s healthy to share! As for WP, I think the crying helps.🥹😭

  3. I try not to tinker about with anything on my page. I might be quite flattered if anyone went to the trouble of stealing my posts, but I would probably be quite cross too.
