Carrots + Egg Tray (Take 2)

Carrot growing in an egg carton? I’m giving it another go but this time I’m doing it a little differently!

Last year, I tried to grow carrots in egg trays but I went big – too big. The cartons dried out which is a problem whenever you grow something in cardboard. I got a few ok carrots after the second sowing but I wanted to try again this year but with a bigger chance of success.

I decided to grow them in a tub in the garden for this method. On the allotment itself, I’ll be sticking with the more conventional method of sowing the seeds straight into the ground.

The tub in question, was weeded and tidied and given a good helping of new compost. I made holes in the egg tray and placed it on top of the box. I filled the compartments with seed sowing compost and put 1 seed in each part. I have gone for ‘Amsterdam forcing’ for this sowing but I have a couple of other ones to try on the plot. I’m hoping by doing it small scale and in the garden, I can keep a better eye on the situation and make sure they don’t dry out.
