Goodbyes are so difficult

I’ve been reading a lot lately. Sounds more high brow than it actually is – I know people have book lists for this year but I doubt many, if any, of the books I read will feature on these!

I do have a copy of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ which I intend to read, I also have ‘Chocolat’, ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ and a whole host of other titles yet to be opened. However, they aren’t the main books I go for at the moment. I will reveal that at a later date.

The point of all this is the fact that I have just finished a book series and experienced a familiar feeling – that of saying goodbye. ‘Goodbye’ to a world I’ve gotten to know and visualise; ‘Goodbye’ to characters I’ve followed through 10 books and have grown to know, even care about; ‘Goodbye’ to storylines that took me through danger, triumphs and uncertainty all to lead me to this place – the end.

The series has ended and I have said my farewells but I realised once again, I don’t like this part of book reading. I don’t like the forced departure – there is a sadness to it (unless I really hated the book but I wouldn’t have reached the end if that was the case). Even if I feel it’s right and the story should end here, I have invested time and emotional effort into this venture, so I don’t always find it easy or comfortable to walk away!

Maybe I am alone in this. Maybe everyone else is glad to turn that final page. I don’t know what it is or why I go through this but it happens and I can’t explain it.

Maybe I just struggle to say goodbye.

  2. I too get sad to say goodbye to a good book. To me good books are like old friends. It’s sad to see them end.
