The headline of today’s post will let you know I’ve tried to do something and failed miserably, again.
I have mentioned once or twice before that I am not a technically minded specimen. I like what some of it can do but I have to accept the fact it won’t be doing anything I tell it to.
Here is my situation: I didn’t like the look of my blog and I wanted to make changes. That is where the trouble started. I would like to point out I did some reading up first and even watched a video which is more than I did the last time!
“It’s simple”, they said. Turns out it’s me that’s simple, apparently.
I can’t pay more money to be able to use fancier themes or even use the other colour palette that came with my theme (?!). Oh, here’s another laugh. I recently got a ‘basic introduction to blogging’ course in my email – they recommend using the .org part of WordPress and BUILDING MY WEBSITE MYSELF!!
Can you imagine? I like the idea but my lack of skills has severely kicked my confidence in the crotch. I digress.
So here I was flicking through the themes available to me, bypassing the ‘build your own’ screen. I picked one I liked the look of and I got the heading of my page looking quite good: except the ‘links’ didn’t link to anywhere. I tried to check that and each one told me, “Yes, Sharon, I link to the page you want me to”. Each one lied.
Then when I tried to move my stuff over, it ended up looking just the same as before which is what I didn’t want. Problem was, at that point, I had somehow activated the new theme and set my blog to the big blue “Coming Soon” screen, while I worked on it.
Very long story short, I couldn’t get it to work. I then found out I couldn’t get it back the way I had it. I couldn’t find it anywhere.
I felt the prickling in my eyes.
“I’ve killed my blog”, I thought. “I’ll need to start all over again”.
Luckily, somehow, my body was possessed by an entity that knew what to do, got the original theme and contents back, then left.
“Wait”, I cried, “I can’t get the ‘Coming Soon’ thing off”.
“Work it out, Idiot”, was the reply.
I did. Eventually.
Now, I have given you the short version. This wasted HOURS of my life, only to end up right back where I started – but at least I hadn’t killed my blog.
Here’s the funny part – after that disaster, I sat and drew out what I wanted my front page to look like. So, last night, while listening to a podcast, I made the changes I wanted and now have it looking the way I drew out! After all that time and panic I did it – on my own – while distracted by somebody else.
So please, do me a favour, go have a look at my ‘home’ page and marvel at my accomplishment!
