A Weekend of Garden Work

How can I work in the garden all weekend and still not be done?

I ask myself that question as I sit, with tired arms and bits of dirt still in my eyes. I mean, I tidied the front as much as I could by cutting the grass, going round the edges a bit and even pulling a few weeds so it looks presentable – apart from the big pile of branches I cut from the buddleia and the lilac.

The pile is shown quite a bit smaller than it was.

I decided, in my over enthusiastic wisdom, that the back garden needed more work. I cut the grass there and did the edges too, plus the obligatory weeding but I have a corner which is bugging me.

I have several small fruit trees and bushes in this corner and a horrible white plastic table which has a broken leg and wobbles badly. I came up with the idea of chopping up the branches and using them like woodchip mulch in that area. I’m not sure what I was hoping for but I started anyway.

It was hard work and although I do have a small wood chipper which a neighbour gave us, it is very loud and as it was a quiet Sunday I didn’t want to be ‘that neighbour’ who disturbed the peace. Instead, I asked my assistant to ‘get chopping’.

He did his best

There was some progress made in other areas however:

I did however find one of the fruit bushes being completely attacked by caterpillars.

I cut off all the leaves that had the invading army attached and put them on the bird feeder – ha, take that plant munchers.

Sadly, I also discovered my little willow tree in the front was being attacked by a huge ant colony. I will do more research to find out what is going on there but it doesn’t look good.

Anyway, after more chopping, a walk with Scooby and a bit more chopping I decided to call it a day. Scooby seemed happy about that too!

If I ever get the back close to ‘finished’ I’ll let you know.

  2. It is an absolute rule that garden work is never done. If it could be done, what would gardeners do?
