Growing carrots using the egg tray method – the honest results

I saw this method on YouTube and thought I’d give it a go. I put up a post previously about how I set it all up but in case you’ve forgotten, I’ll give you a quick reminder.

Today they look like this:

So was it a success? Actually, no it wasn’t but the failure is on my part.

Cardboard dries out very quickly and what I didn’t do was water enough. What you see here is the result of me using up my seed compost and re-sowing the carrot seeds. I was then very careful about the watering. To be honest we got a lot of rain just after I did this and that made all the difference.

The egg trays do really help keep the weeds down so I like it for that and if you are putting them down somewhere you can water them everyday to get them established then I would say this is maybe worth a try. The start of the process does take a lot of time though.

So there you have it: hours or transplanting fiddly little seedlings, only to have to re-do it! But at least this time it looks like I will get a carrot harvest soon. Would I do it again? em……..I don’t think so!
