What motivates you?

This has been on my mind a lot lately and I’m not sure why: Motivation

I follow a lot of blogs, listen to a lot of podcasts and watch more on YouTube. In other words, I’m in some sort of contact with a lot of different character types but they all seem to have one thing in common and that is motivation. It got me thinking.

All those people are motivated to make some sort of content which I then read, listen to or watch. Some of them have other jobs too, children, farms and so on. They get up every single day and do a lot of work and they choose to do it. They are driven by something.

I get it that if you have a farm or homestead, you’ve chosen that lifestyle so you have to do the work but what about all the other stuff? Where do they get all that drive from? Sometimes I feel lazy when I look at them. I sat down for a coffee and watched a 20 minute video on gardening: lazy, I didn’t do the pile of ironing I had planned: lazy, and so on. But I remind myself I do other things too.

I always have a to-do list, well more like 2 of them. One for jobs that must be done this week or this day and a list of things I would like to get done ‘sometime’. I tell myself if they all get ticked off, I can’t be lazy, can I? I get tired, yes but that’s not the same as laziness. I know I’m not one of those type A personalities who needs to start a business every 6 months but I do get motivated. I just don’t know where it comes from.

I’ve been motivated to make a big effort to de-clutter the house and I’m working on it continuously. I initially thought it would be a one-off sort of thing but now I know it’s something I have to keep working on. I’m currently the only person in the house motivated to do this even though they like the look of the place when I’ve cleared out and re-arranged things.

I was motivated to start a blog, even though I wasn’t sure what kind of blog it would be. I started a podcast even though I wasn’t sure what kind of podcast it would be. I started a channel on YouTube…you get the idea! But I was motivated to try at least. Years ago I started writing a book and I still haven’t finished the first chapter. I know how I want it to end and I have some ideas about what I want to put in the middle but I don’t know yet how it’s all going to join up and that not knowing is killing my motivation.

I’m just curious I think about what motivates people to do certain things. I mean, I want to ride my bike but I’m more motivated to go to the allotment. Is it just down to priorities, is it a dream we have, some sort of goal we have to aim for, or is it something else?

I know a lot of unmotivated people too. I see people who don’t seem to have any goals, seem quite happy to go day to day not doing anything much or different from the day before. So why are they so unmotivated while others can’t find enough challenges to tackle? What is it that makes someone’s drive so different to others?

I’ve been thinking about it and just wanted to mention it! What drives you? What makes you aim for a goal (big or small) and achieve it? Can we trick ourselves into feeling motivated to make sure we do things? Leave a comment and let me know your thoughts, if you have the motivation!

  1. I was motivated to start my blog by finding a diary which I had been given for the millennium and in which I had not written a single word by 2011. I have had more success in keeping up a digital diary. I have acquired some loyal readers entirely by accident.

    1. Wow, I wonder why digital is more enticing than paper and pen? I know I enjoy your blog very much. Long may it continue.

      1. Over the past forty years I have done much more writing on a computer than I have on paper so I guess that it just the familiarity.
