The seeds are forming

It’s that time of the year when some of the plants have had their moment and are forming seed pods which intend to take full advantage of.

We do still have lots growing so I’ve come to a decision regarding the allotment: I’m not going to weed certain bays at the moment, preferring to clear them when we have finished picking and the plants are going to the compost heap. Then they will be fully weeded and covered in manure or compost. The exception here is the fruit and herb garden – to a point. I’m not going to stress about them at the moment even though they are a bit of a mess.

“Everything gets done eventually” – it’s become a mantra in our house.

The focus now is on picking and making good use of the seeds on offer.

This is a spring onion (scallion) which grew very big, actually a few of them did so I let them flower and set seed. I’ll bring them in soon to let them dry out so I can gather my spring onion seeds for next year!

This one is a little blurry but can you see the seed pod behind the flower? I’ll be going round the garden to collect a few of the nasturtium seeds. Some I’ll leave so they can grow wherever they want to next year.

I don’t usually save seed from these plants in the back garden. Pot marigold doesn’t need much help with seeding! This is an area I just let them have every year. Having said that, those seeds do look tempting – maybe I could sprinkle them in areas around town to bring a bit more colour to the place.

This have been our best year for sweet peas for years. And now they are setting seed which I will definitely be collecting as there are a lot and this will save me a few pounds in seeds!

I’m starting to dry out some peas on my old tray. There are still a lot on the plants up at the allotment so we’ll have plenty of seed for next year.

I love saving seeds from my plants. It saves me money but as I’m only saving from the best plants, it means I’ll be getting a good healthy strain which grows well for me. What could be better or easier?

    1. Thanks Laura appreciate that! I’m going to save as many of the seeds as I can this year.
