Are customers really a ‘hassle’ to stores now?

A recent trip to our local Co-op has led me to believe some of the staff there see us as a ‘hassle’ they have to deal with.

The store is not very big but it does have a few checkouts in a row, even though I’ve only ever seen 1 of them in use. Most people go to the tobacco kiosk as that’s the only place they seem to have a permanent member of staff.

As I walked in with Dearest Son, he noticed they now have 3 self-service checkouts which I want to state here and now, are an abomination to the whole shopping experience. The three in the co-op all have ‘Card Only’ on them and Dearest Son asked why. I gave him a short answer about the big plan being to do away with cash altogether (which I’m not a fan of).

I would like to point out here that I was talking to my son. Only my son. However, as we approached the kiosk (I wanted to pay with cash), the staff member piped up, “Actually they are to save us hassle”.

This comment made me wonder about a few things:

  1. You work in a shop
  2. Customers come into the shop
  3. Customers want to buy things
  4. You are there to sell them the things
  5. If this is too much hassle for you – why do you work in a shop?

I’ll confess I was annoyed and left the shop feeling as welcome as a farty bee stuck inside someone’s spacesuit.

Am I the only one? Is it because I’m old and an eavesdropping smug 20 something is a thing I can no longer tolerate?

Or do all stores now actually see their customers as hassle? The bigger supermarket in the town also has this attitude. You go in after 6pm and good luck finding a checkout with a human sat there, ready to beep your stuff through and smile while they tell you the extortionate total. No, you have to use one of the self-service tills, some of which do take cash, not that it makes any difference because you need a member of staff to come over every minute to clear something off the screen. Plus the space they have for you to put your shopping on after you’ve beeped it, is so low down, you walk out with back-ache you didn’t walk in with.

Please tell me there are others out there who feel this way about the modern shopping experience. It’s no wonder I do so much shopping online, at least the delivery person is usually friendly!

  1. 😂 You’re hilarious when annoyed! Love it!

They want the ‘card kiosk’ machines to be as annoying and slow as possible, b/c those are the interim tech until they can get the Smart devices under folks’ skin, at birth.

I’ve never liked shopping, now I can hardly bring myself to go at all, except to my fav local antique shop run entirely by old ladies who beam every time someone walks in and still hand-write all the receipts in perfect script and don’t even blink when you hand them wads of cash. 😊

    1. Thank you for the compliment – I think!! I get annoyed by a lot of things but I try really hard to keep the blog positive….doesn’t always work though! And yes I am aware of the chip in the hand thing which some countries are already doing. Frankly they can stick that where there is no sunshine and I don’t mean anywhere on me!!

      1. 😆Absolutely a compliment! Of the highest order in my book!! We get lots of positive in the US, not workin out so well for us.

  2. Luckily, we have a small, local store across the road and every member of staff is friendly, helpful, and remembers your favourites. They don’t have a self-checkout, they’ll help the oldies (me) pack their groceries, accept coinage with grace, and also help get stuff to the car. They smile, the answer questions honestly and clearly. That shop is the reason we’re not moving anytime soon.

    1. That sounds amazing. We have a few independent stores in town but they are so expensive we don’t really use them. They are set up for the tourists to be honest, not the locals.

      1. There is a slight increase in cost, but that cost is allayed with not having to drive a long way. They also use mostly local products, which are cheaper than the big places. Here, the tourists go mostly to the big places, the malls and gaudy centres. We’re left in peace, which is lovely – safe to cross the road, people who wave to each other as they walk their dogs, small parks in any direction, a creek and walks with plenty of benches to sit, trees with koalas and birds everywhere. I think we live in a paradise, and I’ll give up the big shops, the crowds, and the highly advertised goods for what we have here (and I’ll do my best to ensure the local shops stay open (there’s a butcher, a newsagent, a coffee shop, a chemist/small medical centre, a bakery, a pizza shop – what else does one need?)).

  3. I flat out refuse to use self checkouts. My husband is in retail management and every machine they put in a shop is a person who doesn’t have a job anymore.

    1. Exactly! I can’t believe the staff that are still there love these things so much. It’s beyond me.

    2. So I tested this yesterday! I went to our brand new Aldi’s in town, they have only one cashier, all the other checkouts are machines. I was the only one who went to the human, where there was no line, though there was a long line for the machines. She was not at all personable and was like in some kind of speed race! Against the machines?? I’ve never seen anyone scan so quickly and efficiently! She barely noticed me, and clearly couldn’t wait to get away to perform her more important tasks.

      1. I do find Aldi and Lidl tend to be quick scanners but they are usually pleasant!!

      2. Oh yes, I had a similar experience at Food Lion yesterday where she couldn’t wait to get me gone and flip through her phone some more. There is a work ethic problem that’s connected to the replacing of humans with machines.

  5. Our Co-op is a welcoming place with friendly staff and no self checkouts. There are benefits to living in a very small town.

    1. You are so lucky. Our town is small and I really don’t see the shop ever that busy that it will need 3 self-service tills, 3 checkouts and the kiosk. I assume some of the checkout with the conveyor belts will be getting removed.

      1. That seems to be the trend these days.
