When something just isn’t working…

I tried, I really tried but it wasn’t working for me and so it has to go. The decision has been made. What am I talking about? The DIY polytunnel I made earlier in the year – it’s time to say bye bye.

I wanted to see if I could make a polytunnel out of scrap materials I had lying around between the garden and the allotment. It was doing ok but the roof just didn’t work. The structure was pretty good but again, the roof part was the weak link.

I managed to line the whole thing with bubble wrap for extra warmth but I just couldn’t find a way to line the roof and so I made the decision to save up and buy a small polytunnel to put in it’s place.

The one I’ve bought is actually a little smaller than the one I’ve been using but that is fine as I have also decided to move some of the shelving outside for the salads which were struggling with the extra heat they were getting undercover.

I haven’t finished the change-over process yet but I thought I’d bring you up to speed with how far I have managed.

I hear the country is set to get some nice sunny warm weather tomorrow – except here which is to bathed in fog. Either way, I will be working on building the new polytunnel and putting it in place. Hopefully Monday’s post will have good news and views of the new set-up. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

  1. My oh my, you do not have a very inspiring gardening climate! You must have a lot of determination. So, you have to use the Polly tunnel all summer there?

    1. It’s not as bad as it looks! I would use the polytunnel mainly for things like peppers, aubergines, tomatoes, cucumbers. Pretty much everything else can be grown outside. But yes I am quite a determined person!!

      1. Is that b/c of bugs on those particular crops, or extra heat? I wonder b/c it blocks so much sun, which seems to be in short supply there sometimes!

          1. Consider heating from below, so that you don’t need to block the sun!

            1. The polytunnels don’t block the sun that much and their is the wind factor and rain to consider too so a cover is def needed!

    1. Well Scooby should have been doing more of the work since he caused us to lose a very big spider I was about to catch last night – and now it’s roaming in the house somewhere and frankly I’m terrified!

        1. I’m hoping he does! I can’t even put my feet on the floor. I know how pathetic it sounds!

          1. LOL! I am one of those that likes spiders. I don’t want them in my face with big webs but, I find them fascinating. I talk to the tiny spiders in corners. I love the ones near the kitchen window that grab gnats & little ants. I have a photo on my phone (PIN code page) that is a lovely Orb Weaver.

Some folks just don’t like them.

              1. LOL! Didn’t mean to scare. McKinley spiders are a little more sinister looking. Many call them zig-zag spiders because of the web.

                Sorry…
