Harvesting in December?!

I wondered if I could harvest 5 different veg from the allotment (after the storm).

We went up to the allotment today (Sunday) and I had 2 jobs in mind: to check for damage after the storm and to see if I could get a harvest of 5 types of veg.

Well, the good news is we seem to have escaped damage by some miracle. The only thing I spotted was the line of cups which had shown where the asparagus had been planted, was missing a few!

So on with the harvest.

I thought I’d try the carrots first. I saw there are a lot of very small ones but I did notice a few decent sized ones. I took a few but there are a lot of very small ones left in the ground.

I went on to the next part of the plot and tried some parsnips. They were very disappointing but the little things I managed to get will be edible at least. The same could be said of the beetroot but I got some which I think I might pickle.

One success story was the kale – 3 different kinds although the best one is the Red Winter so I’m pleased with that. The red cabbage has enough on it for a couple of meals so I can’t complain there either. The root was showing clear signs of club root but the top part seemed ok.

So, what can you harvest from a cold Scottish plot in December? This:

  1. Good job! I couldn’t even get my tomatoes to grow this year in their regular season! They are normally so prolific I am giving them away to anyone who wants them, which is saying something, because during the summer I eat my weight in tomatoes, lol.

    1. My tomatoes were a disaster this year! Actually I had a lot of disasters but I tend to look for the positive. As we gardeners always say, ‘I’ll get it next year’!

      1. That’s what makes gardening such a joy–we will get it next year! (or not–it’s still worth the time, for sure)

    1. I had a few problems with them this year as I tried the egg carton method. First attempt didn’t work but I re-did it with seed compost and it worked really well, hardly a weed amongst them.
