Stick with me and this will all make sense.
We are in the middle of some cold weather but tonight we are to expect as low as -10C (that’s 14F). I was looking out the window and saw some birds were trying to get what little seeds were left on the feeder so I thought I’d make them something special to see them through this rough period.
We get a range of birds in the garden: robins, sparrows, starlings, blackbird, crow, thrush, bluetit etc, etc. Nothing startling but all nice to watch. Some love to come and peck at the feeder but others are ground feeders so I had a think and came up with:
A SEED TYRE
(and I’m claiming copyright of the name and design as of now!!)
My idea went like this:

In a word – NO. The string went straight through the minute I held it up. So I was a bit disappointed but when I realised the weight, not entirely surprised.
HOWEVER, all is not lost.
It turns out that birds don’t give a crap what the food looks like just as long as it’s there!

I had to stop loitering for photos as there were a lot of them hanging around but wouldn’t come close for the food because I was there, so I had to go back inside and leave them to it!
I haven’t given up on the seed tyre idea – I’m going to try again, just make them a bit smaller and therefore lighter. I’ll let you know if I get them to work.
