Babysitting a caterpillar!

The other week we spotted a fat green caterpillar crawling over the carpet upstairs, heading to Dearest Son’s room. At the time, we still had a lot of frost so I didn’t have the heart to put him outside. I grabbed the first thing I could get my hands on to put him in – a glass jar!

I covered the top with a bit of muslin so there are plenty of air holes. I also raided the fridge to see what he would like for dinner. I thought at first it might be some sort of brassica munching caterpillar so I gave it some red cabbage and a brussels sprout (which he loved). Now, I’m no expert in this field but I have to admit, I had no idea a caterpillar could poop so much, or that they would be so large! Free compost material.

I was going to take a picture of him in caterpillar form but didn’t get round to it. I did clean him out and feed him but one day, he stopped eating and when I checked the next morning, this is what I found:

‘Speaking’ to Michael from https://lifeexperiencesandadventures.wordpress.com/ this may be a baby moth! I’m interested to hear what Michael and others think it is now that I’ve finally managed to put pictures up. I’ll keep you informed of his progress but if you know how long he is likely to look like this I would appreciate a ‘heads-up’!

  1. Hi Sharon. This is definitely the pupae of a moth. Interesting to see which species.
