Well, this hasn’t happened in a looooong time.
Dearest Son and I were talking the other day and agreed he should learn how to do more in the kitchen. He has done some basic cooking and baking but we want to increase his skills. More importantly HE wants to increase his skills.
I gave him a book full of healthy recipes and a menu planning sheet. I directed him to the breakfast pages first and he planned out the first week of breakfasts, then lunches and finally dinners. I noted he didn’t include any puddings – I was so proud!!
Anyway, today, he came down the stairs all excited, proclaiming ‘right I’m off to make breakfast’. He stated very confidently that he would just use the book and I was not needed – so I left him to it.
A short while later, I was called to the table and let me tell you, that’s a real turn-around. So I sat down to a FANTASTIC bowl of healthy layers: Greek yoghurt, sliced plums which had been coated with freshly squeezed orange juice and sweet cinnamon and topped off with sliced almonds. It was such a treat, I can tell you. I can’t remember the last time ANY meal was made for me so to have our son make MY breakfast was so special.
We worked together to make dinner as there were a few things he hadn’t done before and wasn’t sure how to do it. Don’t mind that at all so he gave everything a go and it was just a pleasure to see him enjoying learning new skills and growing in confidence before my eyes. We have also prepared a healthy soup for tomorrow’s lunch, with roasted butternut squash.
He is doing ‘healthy but awesome pancakes’ for breakfast in the morning – I can’t wait!
