Wildlife Emergency on the Allotment!

Not sure what to do here if I’m honest.

Yesterday (26th March), we finally made it up to the allotment to tackle a few more tidy up jobs. The plan was to finish weeding an area where I’d piled up compost from one of the wooden bins, and spread it over the bay for the beetroot and parsnips. Another job was to work on emptying wooden compost bin 1 then turning bin 2 into the empty-ish bin 1.

Then we were going to start turning the 3 dalek type compost bins into the wooden bin 2 – all clear? Good!

Only, it didn’t go to plan.

See the weedy patch against the fence? Well that did get tidied and the compost underneath it did get spread out.

These are the wooden compost bins and daleks which we made a good start on emptying…..until we got to the dalek on the right which has it’s own lid. We were doing well and getting down to the last third of it when we found this:

BABY RATS!!

The 3 in the pictures are the ones which stayed out of the nest, the others went back in! I know some of you will be thinking I should have ‘disposed’ of them but I didn’t have the heart – their eyes were still closed. If I tell the committee they will be in with their poisons and I don’t want that either.

I have heard that rats hate coffee grounds so I’m going to spend the next couple of days gathering some up to take with me next time and put in the bins. I read online last night that the mother might move the family herself since their nest has been disturbed – that is my preferred option!

So that is the wildlife situation on the plot at the moment and I am a little anxious about it to be honest.

However, in other plot news:

I’ll leave you with this picture I took just as we were leaving the allotment. If you have any rat ideas, please let me know in the comments.

  1. Beautiful photos Sharon but omg ๐Ÿ˜ฑ the rats ๐Ÿ€ yikes! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ I donโ€™t have any wise adviceโ€ฆtraps? Thatโ€™s the only thing I can think of.

    1. Yes we discussed that last night but the only traps we have in the garden are for killing them. Hubby suggested taking the dog up! Will see if anyone has a humane trap as I would rather catch and release.

      1. I hear you, yes. I know what you mean. Humane would be the best ๐Ÿ™

  2. The damage caused by rats is probably something you are well aware of! Here in Arizona we have various species of rats. The rodent guy I employ says he is having the best luck with a product he uses which makes the rats infertile. The snakes do a good job of removing rats too and once the area is cleared of rats, we see fewer snakes in our yard. A Win Win!

    1. Yes, I don’t like the idea of eating anything rats have been near. I’m hoping now that they’ve been disturbed, they will move on. I’ll find out in a couple of days!

  3. The rhubarb looks very promising, the rats a bit less so!

    1. Sadly we all know which one grows quicker!

  4. They don’t move on. I used a mix of chocolate powder, raising agent, sugar, and bicard in a bottle or jar with enough space for them to get in. They eat it (who can resist the chocolate?), go home with a belly-ache, and die. If raptors or other critters eat them, there’s no poison, so no ill effect on the one eating. It works on both mice and rats, but it’s worth checking if there are other critters around that might be affected (we also have possums, but they don’t take a second taste either – maybe it’s the bicard/raising agent, which are both a bit bitter).
Good luck. I think it will be an ongoing job, as they always find somewhere to hide/make a home, and those tunnels can go for a long, long way.

    1. Thank you – I will find out this weekend what they are planning! I think I will need to take my traps up though because they don’t stay small for long!
