Garden Tour for the end of July 2025

I grow everywhere and in everything!

I cut the grass yesterday and we took a car-boot full of rubbish to the dump so I’ve been feeling those productive vibes in the garden. The back isn’t 100% yet but it’s good enough that I can get stuff done now which I’m very happy about.

Seed HQ which became seedling HQ is now Salad HQ! I have a range which covers tomatoes, lettuce, spring onions, chard, kale, herbs and a few other bits and pieces. The salads are getting moved around as some are coming to the end of their use. I picked the outer leaves from most for a while, but now I’m letting them grow their best so I can get a small head of lettuce. If you pretend you’re a nosey neighbour and peer in the window, you’ll see where I grow most of my chillies!

Inside the polytunnel, I had more good news. The tomato plants which had all fried, look like they are making a good recovery and there are even tomatoes growing. However, what really caught my eye was these:

I haven’t grown decent cucumbers in years and today I harvested 3!

Elsewhere in the garden:

Some flowers just catch my eye! And no, I haven’t gone mad re the compost bin. Some time ago, I was given an old freezer which I’d planned to use outside to store food in over the winter. Sadly though, it leaked so instead of dumping it, I decided to use it as a compost bin for the garden. The rats can’t get in and it’s kept nicely insulated. Seems to be working very well.

I planted some lettuces in containers in the front garden as it’s cooler there, compared to the back garden. I’m trying to keep us in home-grown salad for many months to come. I’ve also sown some pak choi there, as the coolness of this side should stop it from bolting.

The last pictures show the Atlantic Giant pumpkin I’m growing in a large pot. Not sure if it will work but there is one little pumpkin showing on the end so fingers crossed!

I hope you are all managing to enjoy your gardens (even if you don’t enjoy the gardening so much!)

  1. The freezer should work very well. Lots of good things in the garden.

    1. Yes I’ve seen people bury the freezers and use them in the ground! I’m not doing that though.
