I had thought I’d escaped all damage from the latest storm. I was wrong of course!
Before I went to the allotment the other day, I decided I had better rescue the big Atlantic Giant pumpkin from the back garden. It was in a large pot and rapidly trying to take over what little space we have in the back garden.

I had a quick look in the polytunnel and found that one whole shelving unit had been blown over. The plants on it fell onto the cucumber and tomato plants! I tried to straighten it best I could and I have actually done more work in there today but I don’t have the photos to show you yet!

Everything was quickly pushed back up and I’ll show you the improvements next time!
I also had a couple of my large herb pots damaged in the garden:

I still haven’t sorted them yet – but I will!
When I opened the gate to the plot, this is what I saw:

Covers were blown off bays, one of my bean structures was snapped. In fact, my peas looked like something was missing as they had gone from tall, proud pods to blown over pathetic little things. Then I spotted the poor sweetcorn – I’ll never get a cob at this rate.
When things like this happen, I get annoyed. For a little while anyway. Then I get busy. Yes the pumpkin (and a couple of other squash did get planted out) and I tried to fix some of the storm damage.
The good news is I am still getting good harvests of things like beetroot, carrots and onions. I have even managed a few kohl rabi, despite the club root on that bay. And….drumroll please…..my little Atlantic Giant pumpkin in the compost heap is growing nicely. He even has a friend on the Sankt Martin pumpkin next to him.
The video I did will show you around much better so you can see the good and not so good on the plot as it is at the moment. Before that however, I feel the need to boast slightly. It’s not something I often do but this is a special moment. After years of not being able to grow a decent cucumber (or tomato really), today, after some time in the little garden polytunnel, I came out with this:

The weird shaped one was hidden behind a pot! You really can not beat the taste of home grown cucumbers and tomatoes…and lettuce….and spring onion…you get my point!
