I had a day out in the town of Nairn for their Highland Games day which also included the ‘showies’!

They say there were more than 10,000 people there on the day itself. The main arena has a lot going on at the same time including junior athletics events, pipe bands, highland dancing competitions, tug ‘o war and the heavies (including the famous caber toss). It’s also where the runners for the half marathon complete their final lap for the end of the race.

And I can tell you one thing – it was hot. Really hot. I did see quite a lot of dogs there too and I confess I was a bit worried about them lying out in that heat, especially as I didn’t see too many water bowls being offered. Maybe it was my timing.

The shows were there (or showies if you’re from Nairn!). I admit I am too much of a coward to go on the rides and can blame my motion sensitivity for that! I do enjoy the atmosphere though – the music, the people, the smells. All good fun.

There were a lot of stalls too and I noticed something – the price of the tombolas has shot up! It used to be you could spend £1 and get 4 tickets. Then it went down to 3 tickets. This year, it was often £1 per ticket! Scandalous. I had a go and did win a smart watch but I that’s when I stopped. Usually I’m tombola daft – not this year.

So we clapped in the runners, cheered when achievements were made on the field, watched people being flung around at silly heights over our head and had a great day out. We even managed a fish supper for dinner – a rare treat indeed!
