The garden for Winter
It’s a thought isn’t it? That it will be a long time before we have those long warm days in the sun again. That I’ll be able to just pick a strawberry from a plant and eat it while it still has the Summer’s heat on it. Knowing that soon, patches of ice will be appearing on the plot and in the garden and the ground will be too hard to do much with.
So – that means getting prepared now!
And although I’ve made a start, I’m already behind. Well, that’s how it feels anyway. I have sorted out the polytunnel in the garden though so that’s a win. All the tomatoes were removed and I’ve left a couple of the cucumber plants which are intent on continuing to produce for a little while longer.
It will surprise nobody to find out I was running out of daylight when I filmed this one!
I took a trip to our local garden centre and bought some garlic which I’m planning to plant in the polytunnel at the plot, once I’ve tidied it out! I’ve still got tomato plants in there so I need to remove all of them and put in some compost before I plant out my elephant garlic and a few ‘normal’ bulbs. I only started growing elephant garlic last year and one of my two cloves did well. I’m planning on building up my supply so I’ll be planting out the one I grew as well as the cloves I bought.
I have already taken down my broad bean plants which I’ll be showing in my next YouTube video so if you haven’t subscribed to the channel, now would be a good time so you can see the video and find out some very interesting folklore to do with broad beans (fava beans).
I’ve started to take down the peas also but I have a new project which needs my attention: compost. There is a long story there but I’ll save that for another day! In the meantime, I’m making plans, getting lists of seeds made up and trying to make the allotment and garden work harder for me rather than the other way round.
After all, Winter is coming.
