Dealing with the worst bay on the allotment

From major weeds to a slope, this has it all.

I’ve been working very hard to get the plot ready for the season and the time finally came to tackle the worst bay. I didn’t realise it was the worst but now I know for sure.

It slopes slightly for some reason, which has always bugged me! Its for my potatoes this year so I’m going all out to get it ready. To do this, I decided to treat it like I have most of my beds this year: as if I’m setting them up for the first time, no dig style. This means plenty of cardboard and mulching with organic material – but where could I find enough? Let’s face it, I’m not going to buy that much compost!

I started by clearing the edge by the fence, which is weird as I don’t usually clear that edge first but I knew this one was bad so I set to it. Sheep sorrel, couch grass, mint from next door – it was all there and had to be dealt with. Once I got it as clear as I could, I put down as much cardboard as I could spare. I am going with a full on smothering approach to weeds this year. It was topped off with sheep fleece for good measure!

I managed to get nearly 2 rows of cardboard down (after weeding) and got them nearly covered with my mulch which is the woodchip from my path. I am scraping off the top layer which has weed growth in it (that goes into a special compost bin for later use) and then I scoop up all the years of compost I’d used for the path and piled it on! I had run out of cardboard but I did a run today (a mixture of shops and raiding the cardboard skip at the dump) so I think I have a good supply now – I’ll see how far I get!

I did a video of course for my channel on YouTube which you can see here:

I was visited by a few recording Gremlins on the day but I did my best! Looking forward to getting the rest of that bay sorted out but today was rain and howling gales and it looks like we have more of that tomorrow.

I’ll keep you posted.

  1. Nice work Sharon. I planted mint some years ago because I read that mint deters rabbits. Well, now I have rabbits AND mint! Ha ha

  2. Good for you on doing all that, which I’m sure was well worth the effort. I’ve always found that generating enough compost is a problem. xx

    1. There is never enough. Once I’ve done my new paths with woodchip it will be years before I can use that stuff on the beds but it’s a good system to have.
